"Dunkirk" by Chris Nolan depicts the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II through the perspectives of the land, sea, and air. Its ensemble cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Harry Styles. Dunkirk has some amazing parallel action and great, mature use of the language of cinema. "Red Tails" is also a war film.
The answer is: You can lie as much as you want until it serves the story. You shouldn't make shortcuts when it's convenient. Do your research and honor the world that you'e portraying in your film.
